Gorbals TWPS

Client

Scottish Water

Duration

3 Weeks

Project Overview

A&L MEICA was engaged by Scottish Water at the Gorbals Treated Water Pumping Station to replace a DN700 PN25 Gate valve, which is crucial for the daily supply of water to communities across Ayrshire and the surrounding areas. The project involved repairing one valve on-site with the installation of a new drive nut, while the second valve required removal for extensive refurbishment before being returned to the site.

Works Detail

Key Achievements

  • Emergency Works: The project was considered emergency works by the client and was successfully completed without any disruption to the customer network.
  • Valve Refurbishment: One valve was repaired on-site, and the second valve was refurbished off-site and returned to operational status.

Challenges Faced

  • Valve Size and Weight: The valves being replaced/refurbished weighed 2.2 tonnes, posing logistical challenges.
  • Supplier Lead Times: DN700 PN25 valves are not off-the-shelf products, resulting in supplier lead times of over 16 weeks. To mitigate this, an existing valve from the client was used to replace the valve being refurbished, ensuring minimal impact and quick return to operational status.

Stakeholder Involvement

  • Client PRC: Gavin McBride
  • A&L Project Manager: Tom Miller
  • A&L Graduate Project Engineer: Nicholas Brookes
  • A&L Supervisors: David McKell and Jim Thomson

Environmental and Safety Measures

Due to the nature of the works and the direct interface with treated public drinking water, DOMS procedures were strictly followed to ensure environmental and safety compliance.

Lessons Learnt

  • Valve Suitability: The incumbent valves proved unfit for the requirements due to multiple daily actions at a system head pressure exceeding 20 bar. New valves have been specified that are more suited to the operations at Gorbals TWPS and will be integrated into the existing system in the near future.

Additional Notes

  • Future Integration: The refurbished valve will now be utilised as a backup should the need arise.
