A&L MEICA were engaged by Scottish Water to renew 2x DN600 PRV at Alnwickhill Pressure Release Valve station. This was a high profile project on a critical asset with zero margin for error.
A&L MEICA, in collaboration with Cla-val UK, was engaged by Scottish Water to replace two DN600 PRV bodies at the Alnwickhill PRV station due to severe cavitation, which posed a high risk of failure. This station supplies clean water to over 100,000 homes. Given the valves’ weight of over 900kg, A&L enlisted AB2K’s specialist lifting services to manage the lifting operations for removing the old valves and installing the new pressure release valves.
PRV A was shut down while PRV B remained operational, ensuring continuous water supply to local residents. The removal and installation of each valve were scheduled for one week each, including preparatory work, installation, and commissioning. Both valves were successfully replaced on schedule, meeting Scottish Water’s satisfaction.
A&L also added an orifice plate to the installation to reduce the working pressure from approximately 4 bar to 0.5 bar, addressing the constraints of Edinburgh’s ageing Victorian water infrastructure to minimise wear and maximise asset lifespan.
